Here’s what I’ve watched this season (mostly anime). There’s a LOT more than last season, so I might abbreviate some
Also decided to add games and movies this season (as best I remember, at least).
Table of Contents
Seasonal Anime
Kaiju Girl Caramelise
As a manga reader, I KNEW they would knock it out of the park as a story. Did NOT expect the animation to be as quality as it was! The voice acting and musicians also did great!!
They did SUCH a good job of making Kuro look like an adorable goober
The author’s through line of self acceptance is done SUPER well. I’m a lot more caring about who I am than I used to be, but even then I can see a lot of myself in Kuro’s anxieties.
Highly reccomend this series!! Very good at balancing the absurdist with emotional. The opening is REALLY good, too!
Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games
I’m also a manga reader for this series. Quite enjoying the anime so far! Mio and Aya have a cute relationship, and I really like the choice of voice for Mio (Rika Nagae). She reminds me a bit of how Fern from the Frieren series sounds.
I thought the use of in-game Street Fighter footage would annoy me, but I got used to it quick enough.
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You
Tender and kind. Yamada and Sasaki’s VAs did AMAZING. At first I expected more contrast with Yamada’s on-duty and off-work voicing, but after seeing her more casual side speak on her work mode’s face, I can see why they held back.
The music felt a little tonally all over the place. They’re not bad tracks themselves, though!
Chainsmoker Cat
Crude, but has it’s honest moments amidst all the insane comedy. Interested in the fact that beastfolk seem to play a parallel to indigenous minority groups.
Also, they notably NAILED the vibe of a scraggly feral catgirl for Yaniko. The whole series is definetly something I knew people would like, so I’m glad to see it landed well.
Reiwa no Dara-San
Goofy and able to hold a bunch of thematic tones together pretty well. Very much enjoy Kaoru. He’s a lil goober (the scene where he just wants to use Dara’s sprit magic to shoot lasers is a favorite).
Idk what she expected when she taught a kid how to shoot beam attacks...
I do like how the LGBT+ dynamic isn’t realy questioned for either of the main kids. Kaoru wearing girls’ clothing and Hinata’s hyper tom boy look are fun because nobody really makes a big deal out of it. Makes it feel human in a relaxed way.
The Ghost in the Shell
Haven’t seen the original, so I can’t comment on how this compares. I do feel the 90s energy very strongly, and I quite enjoy it!
The comedic bits feel in tone with the current art style, so I have no complaints there. The action is similarly well paced. In fact, I kinda wish we had a little more of it!
The comedy and horny shots feel very in character for what little I know of the original manga, too.
There’s some interesting philosophical questions raised through the series on personhood and such. Overall I’m highly enjoying the series!
Movies and Others
SoniAni: Super Sonico The Animation
It was high time to try the series with the stacked anime girl every horny lesbian would go for. I think I get the appeal of her character now. She’s a hard worker, cute in a klutzy way, and she’s stacked as hell.
I watched it cause I found the DVD in the library catalog, surprisingly. Dunno why, but she’s there LOL.
Kamen Rider ZEZTZ
VERY solid series. The action and special effects used the dream motif SUPER well this season, and I think it was a super smart way to connect a bunch of seemingly unrelated filiming locations
Fujimi and Nasuka were a little bit too in the background after the mid season twist IMO, but they still were great comedic relief/grounding. Huge props to the actors for those two
The middle episodes wavered a little, but I think the ending was still satisfying. Wish they’d done a bit more of an arc for Code Numbers 5 and 6, but it was probably production related.
REDLINE
Enjoyed it enough. Plot was kinda hasty, but it was solidly entertaining. The animation was gorgeous, for sure!
Tron: Ares
SUPER fun! The team really captured the atmosphere of the series. The Music was phenomenal.
Games
Amanatsu+
Idk what she expected when she taught a kid how to shoot beam attacks...
A solid sequel! I only played Amahara’s route (in both this and the original). I like the depth it added to the characters, and was a nice comfy feeling.
I do wish we’d gotten more of the friend group, but honestly it’s fine. I still had a blast!
Street Fighter 6
Linked the Steam version, but I’m actually playing it more on my Switch 2. Lack of cross save sucks, but otherwise I’m enjoying it!
Pseudoregalia
(gifs viia Juks_Fanterisen on tenor)
Fun time so far! My friends were on level design and music for this. It’s interestig how little story there was compared to what I was expecting, but I guess that’s how they kept scope down. Getting lost was a llittle frustrating, so I started had to use an occasional hint guide.
Music
I’m speeding through this section ‘cause it took me so long to make the rest. Overall trends are I’m finding a lot of new artists recently. Probably a mix of finally clicking with how to find good music, and changes in the youtube algorithm.
